Gear # 3 – SIXTEEN HOURS OF HORSEPOWER

Maximum Horsepower 3

I feel that a small business owner has to have the confidence to do seven out of every ten tasks by his or herself otherwise it would be too hard to control and develop the business.

Randy Ralston grew up in Amarillo, Texas to working blue-collar parents that through their example taught him a strong work ethic by example.  In high school, Randy competed as a freestyle wrestler where grit and determination became part of who he is and how he works.  In 1994, Randy graduated with a double major from St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX in Spanish and International business.  In his Sophomore year, he attended the University of Granada, Spain where he studied Spanish language and cultural studies.  During the year in Spain, Randy met his wife of 25 years, Yuko, who is from Japan.

Randy began to work for a Minnesota-based conglomerate in 1994 while completing his undergraduate degrees.  He has worked in many funcional areas of the company from logistics, sales, marketing, business analytics/strategy, and sales management in eight different industries through his career.  While working in sales and living in California, Randy completed his Master of Business Administration at Pepperdine University in 2000.

Randy Ralston is currently a sales manager in the Health Care Industry at the same Fortune 100 company where he has worked for the last 25+ years and is an Adjunct Professor teaching business strategy at two Twin Cities universities.  Randy’s passion is to coach and develop his team driving business growth and he loves sharing his experiences with students teaching about business problem solving.  He serves as a Director on the Board of Camp Nathanael, a Minnesota non-profit.

Ouside of his professional interests, Randy has many other interests including art, music, and woodworking.  Randy’s passion for music across many genres of music has grown over the last thirty years.  Randy learned Spanish Classical guitar when he was in Spain and branched into many other types of music and many instruments.  This has driven him to use the time that we have been at home over the last five months to learn to pick the Scruggs-style three finger banjo.  Randy is also an avid wood carver and woodworker.

Randy’s belief is that the success of a large business is in many ways compatible with the success of smaller businesses.  Success for larger companies comes from helping smaller customers to save money, improve productivity, and ultimately improve profit and value that makes both companies successful.
